Pelican 1520 Case
Material
Made to to be effective from
temperature ranges of- 40° F to 210° F, using the
Pelican 1520 case to its max is rare. The Pelican
1520 case is injection molded using polypropylene
copolymer. The material is ultra strong, but can be
heavy and bulky for some.
Colors
A choice of 5 colors are available
for the Pelican 1520 case. The standard and most
popular color is Black. Aside from black the 1520
can be ordered in Orange, Yellow, Silver and Desert
Tan. Orange and Yellow are often used by paramedics
and other life saving services. Desert Tan is most
often used for the military in their desert
operations.
Latches
There are a total of 2 latches on the
Pelican 1520 case. Both are located on the front
edges. Each latch is a double throw design meaning
the latch pries against itself when opening. When
the latches are shut, they remain shut. The metal
pin used with the latches is stainless steel and
will not rust.
Handle
1 handle located in the front of the
case directly in the middle contains rubber molded
into it. The rubber helps with grip and provides a
no slip surface. The handle measures 9.75" wide and
can rotate 180° up or down. This allows flexibility
for the consumer when traveling and low profile when
shipping. Again both pins used in the 1520 handle
are stainless steel.

Purge Valve
All Pelican
cases including the Pelican 1520 case have an
automatic purge valve. In high altitudes a vacuum is
formed within airtight cases, or bags. The purge
valve allows air to move freely in and out of the
case equalizing pressure and allowing the case to
easily be opened. In this respect the case is still
watertight, but technically saying it is "airtight"
is a fallacy. The purge valve is automatic and
requires no user input to function.
Locking HolesOn the front
of the case there are two padlockable holes built
in. Both are located outside the latches on the
front. Both lock holes are metal plated so cutting
the case rather than the lock would be difficult.
The Pelican 1520 case is often used for camera
equipment so locking holes are a must.
NameplateFor those who
require a nameplate the Pelican 1520 is well suited.
On the front of the case directly center is a 4.5" x
1" blank nameplate. Most Pelican cases come with
one. At the time of this article if the
nameplate is sent into Pelican you will be allowed 19
characters on 3 different lines. It costs $9.95 each
and is shipped within 2-3 days from arrival.
Hinges
Engineered for
transportation a Pelican 1520 case will often be
exposed to strangers. A safety feature built in are
the one way pin holes which hold the hinges. If you
locked your case and a thief could tap out the pins
which hold the hinges, how safe is the case really?
Pelican hinges feature pins that once put in are not
exposed on the outside and cannot be tapped out. The
only way to remove a pin is to pull it out one way,
which would be a difficult task considering how
deeply embedded the pin is in the hinge joint.
Bottom
Taking a look at the
bottom of the pelican 1520 is nothing special. There
are 2 bumpers on the bottom in which the case rests.
The bumpers only protrude slightly and are part of
the case, so they can never be damaged or knocked
off.
